Recounting Stories of Children Working in Tanneries in Harmful Living Conditions

Living Skin to Screen within AFAC Film Week in Cairo at Zawya Cinema

Produced 5 years ago, Ahmed Fawzi Saleh's Living Skin continues to penetratingly shed light on the social discrimination in Egypt that remains to dominate in the Egyptian community despite all the political upheavals that have been faced most recently. The award-winning documentary film will screen as part of the 2nd AFAC Film Week.

Fawzi's 48-minute Living Skin follows the stories of children who live and work in the tanneries to highlight the inhuman living conditions which the tanneries' inhabitants and workers are witnessing surrounded by very hazardous chemicals which are harmful to humans and the environment.

Landing as the first Egyptian documentary to be available on DVDs for the general public, Living Skin was screened on BBC network and Catalonia television.

Produced by Al Batrik for Art Production and Cinema Services, Living Skin had its world premiere at Abu Dhabi Film Festival within New Horizons competition in October, 2010, where it received a Special Mention from the jury of the competition. In March 2011, the film won Best First Film at the International Mediterranean Cinema Festival in Morocco. The film also received Radwan Al Kashef Award at Luxor African Film Festival 2012, First Prize for Best Documentary at the Baghdad International Film Festival 2011, and a Certificate of Appreciation from the Jury of Alexandria International Film Festival 2011.

The film was an official selection at Documentary Edge Festival in New Zealand, Hot Dox Canadian Documentary Film Festival, DOK. Fest- International Documentary Film Festival Munich, and Baghdad Eye Human Rights Film Festival.

Launched its first edition in Beirut last year by Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC), the 2nd AFAC Film Week is taking place this year in Cairo from 15-22 April, 2015, at Zawya cinema. This year's edition includes a selection of 14 documentary, feature, short and experimental films hailing from seven Arab countries. The films to be screened-many of them are Egyptian premieres- are produced between 2011- 2014.

Ahmed Fawzi Saleh is a director and a human rights activist. Born in Alexandria, Saleh was raised in Port Said and holds a degree in History from Suez Canal University. He then studied Screenwriting in High Cinema Institute (2009). As a Researcher and a Scriptwriter, he took part in several documentaries. He also directed an experimental short film, Mocha.
