Toufic Khreich's Troubled Waters Participates in Busan International Short Film Festival

Troubled Waters, by the Lebanese Director Toufic Khreich, competes in the official competition within the 31st Busan International Short Film Festival (BISFF), in South Korea. The film screens twice within the framework of the festival which closes on Tuesday, April 29th, 2014.

In March, Troubled Waters participated in the 5th ALFILM - Arab Film Festival Berlin which presents a panorama of contemporary Arab film production including feature films, documentaries, and experimental films in addition to foreign film productions that address Arab-World- related issues.

Troubled Waters had its world premiere within the frame work of the 10th Dubai International Film Festival where it competed at Muhr Arab Short competition. Lebanese actor Camille Salameh, who stars in the film, won a Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of Salameh's outstanding performance and his remarkable cinematic record.

The film was also part of Dubai Film Market's Cinetech through MAD Solutions, the company serving as the film's distributor and marketing consultant, where distributors and sales agents were allowed to see the film. Cinetech is a digital video library includes more than 400 films.

The 25-minute short tells the story of Eskandar, who comes back to Lebanon after 27 years of absence, in the hope of reconciliation with his father. Once in Lebanon, he is hunted by his memories, which bounce him between the past and the present, living the separation and the reunion with his father at the same time.

Written and directed by Toufic Khreich, Troubled Waters is produced by Maisonette Film Production in co-production with The Postoffice and stars Rodrigue Sleiman and Camille Salameh.

Born and raised in south Lebanon, Khreich moved to Beirut for university studies where he graduated from the Lebanese Aacademy of Fine Arts, L'Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts (ALBA), in 2003, with a short film Houna Sawt Al Janoub (Voice of the South). Since 2003, he worked as an assistant director with Arab and International directors in TV commercials, short films, and feature films. He directed a number of TV commercials and documentaries, as well as acted in many short films.

More than two years ago, Khreich started drafting a script for his first feature film, Cold Coffee, which allowed him to participate at the Sud Écriture workshop. Held between Benin and Tunisia, the workshop was conducted by Scriptwriter and Director Jacques Fieschi in 2012. In the same year, Khreich participated with the film script at the Med Film Factory in Jordan, and in 2013, he attended a rewriting workshop organized by the Lebanese Association of Cinema. Likewise, the film script was part of the Carthage Film Festival within the framework of Producers' Network and Atelier de Projets.
