Warda Breaks the Egyptian Box Office Records
After breaking the box office records with an average score of 100,000 EGP revenues per day, the spine-chilling thriller Warda has landed as the highest-grossing film in the quietest season in Egyptian theatres. The film has successfully stolen the limelight since its release and racked up nearly half a million EGP. Although Warda was not released during a high film season and unfolds paranormal events with a no-star cast, the film's revenues stand out as a testimony to its success.

Screened across 9 governorates, Warda has stirred a wave of controversy on social media platforms for its unprecedented subject, which has never been traced in Egyptian cinema. The audiences were struck by the film's pre-final scene ending which was echoed in their comments on the social media platforms. Within less than a month, Warda's official Facebook page has reached 117,000 fans, placing it among the top 5 fastest-growing entertainment pages in Egypt, and comments increased to more than 50,000.

Through its representatives, who were present in theatres during the weekend, MAD Solutions, the distributor of the film, examined and categorized the audience. The statistics revealed that Warda has attracted in the majority and mostly females and that more than two -thirds of the audience was composed of young people under 30.

Released on Thursday in 27 screens across Cairo and other governorates, Warda premiered at 07:00 pm Cairo time and witnessed a jam-packed turnout that several screening venues posted the 'full house' sign outside their ticket offices.

The company also indicated that females formed 65% of the film's audience in most of the screenings. Having a female as the lead character in Warda, was not the main reason behind this, as displayed in the marketing campaign, the growing interaction of the fans illustrated that females had a more burgeoning response to the film's thrilling atmosphere than males.

MAD Solutions also explained that this comes as a result of the film's mysterious nature and the audiences' interest to gauge the film's storyline prior to its release as well as their willingness to accept such kind of films.

Statistics also showed that more than two-thirds of the audience who went to see Warda were young people under the age of 30. Most of them belonged to the mid to late 20s age bracket and widely attended in groups. It was also noticed that the positive reviews of the audience and the word-of-mouth recommendations have widely encouraged film goers to attend the film screenings.

Directed by Hadi El Bagoury and written by Mohamed Hefzy, Warda is produced by The Producers and Film Clinic, in co-production with Aroma Pictures.

The film traces a video blogger who returns to his Egyptian countryside home to document and investigate strange happenings that have been disturbing his family since the death of his father. The film is created in the Found-Footage style, a growing independent genre of filmmaking where all or an essential part of a film depends on discovered video recordings, often left behind by missing or dead protagonists.
