Three Films by Syrian Director Soudade Kaadan Screen on Netflix
The feature film The Day I Lost My Shadow and the two short films Aziza and Besieged Bread, by Syrian director Soudade Kaadan will screen on Netflix becoming available for audiences worldwide. Soudade's films highlight the situation in Syria, starting from the year of 2011. Furthermore, the three films have received dozens of awards, including Lion of the Future at Venice Film Festival that went to The Day I Lost My Shadow. Starting this month, Soudade Kaadan's films have received rave reviews and have been praised regionally and internationally, including Variety that described one of the films as "A powerful story of a Syrian mother separated from her son" as well as Film Critic Tarek El Shennawi who commented on the film saying "Unique and human-centered". Another was described by Shorouknews as "Tales of the stolen dreams"; by Cineuropa as "Soudade’s first experience is original and magnificent" and by Backseat Mafia as "A Strong dramatic narration that sheds light on post-war trauma". In addition, Actress Kinda Alloush thanked Soudade for her work, saying "Thank you for making our voices heard".

About The Day I Lost My Shadow:

Set against the backdrop of the events in Syria in 2012, the film follows a young mother who lives alone with her son since her husband works outside Syria. In one chilly winter, her gas cylinder goes empty, so she goes out searching for one in Damascus where she meets with some activists in a car.

The film nabbed a number of awards, including Lion of the Future at Venice Film Festival; Special Jury Prize at Los Angeles Film Festival; Best Director at Mostra de València-Cinema del Mediterrani and two awards at Vancouver International Women in Film Festival. Additionally, it competed in many international film festivals worldwide, including Dallas International Film Festival, El Gouna Film Festival, London Film Festival, Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival, Singapore International Film Festival, and Skip City International D-Cinema Festival.

Directed and written by Soudade Kaadan, The Day I Lost My Shadow stars Sawsan Arshid, Samer Ismail, Reham Alkassar, and Hanan Haj. The film is distributed by MAD Solutions across the Arab world.

About Aziza:

Directed and written by Soudade Kaadan, the short film Aziza stars Caresse Bashar and Abdel Mounaem Amayri. The film follows Ayman, a Syrian refugee in Lebanon, who teaches his wife how to drive his car, the only thing left from home. However, the driving lessons spiral into madness and nostalgia.

Aziza landed its world premiere at The Sundance Film Festival, where it won Short Film Grand Jury Prize. Also, it received a number of awards, including Best Narrative Short Film at Chicago International Film Festival; Special Mention at Motovun Film Festival; Best Short Film at Curitiba International Film Festival. The film was selected at several prestigious festivals, including Stockholm International Film Festival, Moscow International Film Festival, San Francisco Arab Film Festival, Pragueshorts Film Festival and Dallas International Film Festival. About Besieged Bread:

Directed and written by Soudade Kaadan, Besieged Bread stars Lama Hakeim, Gabriel Malki, and Ehab Shaaban. Set against the backdrop of Syria, the film follows a young woman smuggling bread that crosses the path of a young man. Brought together by fate, they soon realize that they're in the middle of a no-win situation.

Besieged Bread film landed its world premiere at Fribourg International Film Festival. The film’s director received a Certificate of Appreciation from Malmo Arab Film Festival, Sweden. Also, the film took part in a number of film festivals, including Alexandria Mediterranean Film Festival and Calgary International Film Festival. Born in France, Soudade Kaadan is a Syrian director who studied theater criticism and graduated from the Institut des Etudes Scenique, Audiovisuelles et cinematographiques (IESAV), Saint Joseph University in Lebanon. She directed and produced several documentary films for Aljazeera Documentary Channel, UNDP, UNHCR, and UNICEF. Her films have been screened at several venues nationally and internationally. Kaadan received several international awards. Her film The Day I Lost My Shadow marks her feature debut. It won the Lion of the Future award at Venice Film Festival.
