FROM MEIR, TO MEIR sets the Mood at Cairo Cinema Days
FROM MEIR, TO MEIR by director Maggie Morgan had a two full house screenings at Cairo Cinema Days' fifth edition. The film received a lot of engagement from the audience throughout its runtime, until the majority of the crowd burst into tears at the finale, creating quite an emotional atmosphere during Cairo Cinema Days.
 
It is worth mentioning that Maggie Morgan’s film was awarded the Jury Prize in the Long Documentary Competition at the National Egyptian Film Festival on Monday 30, 2022.
 
The film was praised by critic Mahmoud Abdel Shakour, describing it as "A magnificent film; if I were in charge of a satellite channel, I would acquire the right to display this influential picture instantly to be watched by all Egyptians." While Azza Sultan described the film through her article in Elfan website saying, “Through her research for her family's heritage, Maggie Morgan created a film that audiences can relate to even if they don't belong to Meir.”
 
The film recently landed its world premiere at Aswan International Women Film Festival, where it also won the NUT Award for Best Egyptian Film Supporting Women’s Work. Furthermore, the film will be featured at the 22nd Festival du Cinéma Africain de Khouribga (FCAK) in Morocco
 
The director visits Meir, the village where her grandparents were born and the place they left but never forgot. When she visits Meir, now, she finds it a place where most of the inhabitants want to leave. 
 
Directed by Maggie Morgan, the film stars Nasser Loza, Shahira Loza, Romany Abdeltawab, and Samir El Qommos. It is produced by The Pianola, and features Zaki Aref, and Shady Fikry as DoPs, with music by Muller Hany. MAD Solutions handles the film’s distribution.
 
Maggie Morgan is a filmmaker, a scriptwriter, and an adjunct professor at the American University in Cairo (AUC). She began her career with films, documentaries, and shorts, including THE PICTURE (2002), which was shown on several Arab TV channels, RAYHEEN ALA FEEN (WHERE ARE WE GOING) (2007), ASHAN FARIDA (FOR FARIDA) (2012). In addition to that, she created a video for “Regala Sanad” (Supportive Men) campaign, which pulled in 2m viewers on Facebook in 2018. 
 
Morgan made her feature-length directorial debut ASHAM in 2013. Starred by Amina Khalil and Aly Kassem, the film received awards for Best Director and Best Editor at Malmo Arab Film Festival in Sweden, the Special Jury Mention at the Festival International des Films D’Orient in Geneva, among others.
 
Her most recent documentary FROM MEIR, TO MEIR (2021) world premiered at Aswan International Women Film Festival and gained awards and wide acclaim when screened. Currently, she is working on her latest film LEILA AND I, which received two awards for development at Cairo Film Connection in 2019.
