Afghan film The Orphanage by director Shahrbanoo Sadat will continue screening at Zawya Cinema after the massive turnout during its first week. The film will have four screenings during the upcoming week, starting from Wednesday, February 3, to Tuesday, February 9.

The film will screen on Wednesday, February 3, at 9:30 PM; Thursday, February 4, at 3:30 PM; Sunday, February 7, at 9:30 PM, and Monday, February 8, at 3:30 PM.

In the late 1980s, 15-year-old Qodrat lives in the streets of Kabul and sells cinema tickets on the black market. He is a big Bollywood fan and he daydreams himself into some of his favorite movie scenes. One day the Police brings him to the Soviet orphanage. But in Kabul the political situation is changing. Qodrat and all the children want to defend their home.

The Orphanage world premiered at the Cannes Film Festival within the Directors' Fortnight section, and nabbed the Golden Puffin: Best Film at Reykjavík International Film Festival. Also, it took part in a number of international film festivals, including: Munich International Film Festival, Chicago International Film Festival, Asia Pacific Screen Awards, Film Festival Cologne, Palm Springs International Film, London Film Festival, Busan International Film Festival, International Film Festival Rotterdam, Melbourne International Film Festival and Brussels International Film Festival.

Written and directed by Shahrbanoo Sadat, The Orphanage is inspired by the diaries of Anwar Hashimi, who stars in it alongside Qodratollah Qadiri, Sediqa Rasuli, Masihullah Feraji, Hasibullah Rasooli and Anwar Hashimi. The film is produced by Katja Adomeit and distributed in the Arab world by MAD Solutions.

Shahrbanoo Sadat is an Afghan, female writer and director, based in Kabul. She studied at Atelier Varan Kabul. Her first feature film Wolf and Sheep was developed with the Cannes Cinéfondation Residence in 2010, marking Shahr - 20 years old at the time - the youngest ever selected. After six years, the film won the main award at Directors’ Fortnight in 2016.

The Orphanage marks Shahrbanoo's second feature film after Wolf and Sheep, which both come as part of a planned pentalogy; five films based on the unpublished autobiography of Anwar Hashimi. The film was presented at Directors’ Fortnight in 2019.
