Submarine Competes at the Alexandria Short Film Festival

Monia Akl's short film Submarine will compete in the Feature Film Competition at the 4th edition of the Alexandria Short Film Festival (April 18-24). The film is scheduled to be screened at 6:00 pm on Friday, April 20th, at the Bayram El Tunsi Theater.

Alexandria Short Film Festival is a film festival established by the Department of Art and held in April of each year in Alexandria. The festival aims to spread the culture of short films among the public, and create dialogue and communication between filmmakers and the audience.

Under the imminent threat of Lebanon's garbage crisis, Hala, a wild child inside of a woman, is the only one to refuse evacuation, clinging to whatever remains of home.

Directed by Mounia Akl, Submarine stars Yumna Marwan, Julian Farhat, and Adel Chahine. Produced by Cyril Aris and Jinane Chaaya, and distributed by MAD Solutions in the Arab world, Submarine was also awarded the James Bridges production grant.

The film landed its world premiere at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, followed by its participation at the Toronto International Film Festival, in addition to 20 international festivals. Submarine has won the Special Jury Prize in the Muhr Short competition at the 13th Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF), the Liberty Global International Student Short Award at the Denver Film Festival (USA), an Honorable Mention at the Atlanta Film Festival, and an Honorable Mention at the International Oriental Film Festival of Geneva (FIFOG).
