Erige Sehiri’s UNDER THE FIG TREES claims Carthage Film Festival’s Silver Tanit Award, gears up for Marrakech


Erige Sehiri’s debut feature film UNDER THE FIG TREES took home the Carthage Film Festival’s Silver Tanit Award, where it held its Arab world premiere in the festival’s official competition with the film’s cast and crew in attendance. 
 
The movie is also gearing up for the Marrakech International Film Festival – where it previously won the Altas Post-Production Award which will be holding its 2022 edition from November 11th to the 19th. Moreover, it has been chosen as the Tunisian entry for Best International Feature Film at the 2023 Oscars.
 
The film is scheduled to have two screenings – the first in the presence of the cast on Saturday, November 12th at 9:30 pm at Cinéma le Colisée, and the second on Tuesday, November 15th at 7:30 pm in the Salle des Ambassadeurs at the Palais des Congrès de Marrakech.
 
Furthermore, UNDER THE FIG TREES will be featured in the 2022 Red Sea International Film Festival – which is scheduled to run from December 1st to the 10th in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia – as part of the Festival Favorites category. 
 
The movie held its world premiere at the Cannes International Film Festival, where it received the EcoPro Jury Award in the Directors’ Fortnight. It also featured in the Toronto, Karlovy Vary, and Sarajevo international film festivals, in addition to competing in the Melbourne International Film Festival’s official competition and the CineVision competition at the Filmfest München.
 
Additionally, UNDER THE FIG TREES was critically acclaimed by the world’s most reputable media outlets. 
 
“Under the Fig Trees has the clarity to see the strengths and weaknesses across the uneven land, with wisdom emerging as the juiciest fruit of all this labor,” wrote Stephen Saito in the Moveable Fest. Meanwhile, ROB ALDAM described the movie in Backseat Mafia as “a thoughtful and concise drama.”
 
Moreover, Lovia Gyarkye in Hollywood Reporter said that “Under the Fig Tree is a pleasurable and immersive experience that offers an elegant, understated tapestry of complex interactions.” 
 
Taking place over the course of a day, UNDER THE FIG TREES presents an intergenerational dialogue between a group of teens and older folk as they work the summer harvest, catch feelings, attempt to understand each other, and navigate the complicated terrain of building deeper ties.
 
Directed by Erige Sehiri and co-written by Ghalya Lacroix and Peggy Hamann, UNDER THE FIG TREES stars Fide Fdhili, Feten Fdhili, Ameni Fdhili, Samar Sifi, and Abdelhak Mrabti
 
The film is a joint production between Tunisia’s Henia Production, Switzerland’s Akka Films, France’s Maneki Films, and Germany’s In Good Company
 
Frida Marzouk is the DOP and the film’s music is by Amine Bouhafa.
 
The movie is being distributed globally by Luxbox, while MAD Solutions is handling its distribution and marketing in the Arab world.
 
UNDER THE FIG TREES is Erige Sehiri's first feature film, claiming a $5,000 production grant from MAD Solutions – in partnership with the Gouna Film Festival – at the Venice Film Festival’s Final Cut. 
 
Previously, Sehiri directed the award-winning feature-length documentary RAILWAY MEN.
