BONBONE Film Screens at the Malmo Arab Film Festival in Sweden


A few days after it won the Best Short Film award at the Elia Short Film Festival in Jerusalem reaching a total number of ten international awards, the short film BONBONÉ by director Rakan Mayasi is going to participate in the 8th Malmö Arab Film Festival in Sweden (October 5-9).

The film will be screened on Sunday, October 7, at 02:30 PM, Sweden Time (GMT +1).

The Malmö Arab Film Festival is dedicated to screening films from across the Arab world for the different communities living in Sweden that are about 175 different nationalities. The festival sees thousands of cinema-goers from Malmö and the region as well as famous actors, directors, producers and film professionals attend the festival in Malmö to enjoy the year's greatest films from the Arab world.

BONBONÉ won the Director's Award at the North Carolina Film Awards in the US, the Best Short Film and Best Script awardsat the 2018 Festival Internacional de Cine Bajo la Luna - Islantilla Cinefórum, the Audience Award and Jury Award for Best Short Film awards at the 4th Festival Ciné-Palestine (FCP) in Paris, France, the Best Short Film award at the 16th Festival Internacional de Cine de Almería (FICAL) in Spain, the Best Short Film award at each of the Moscow International Film Festival in Russia and the Gabes Film Festival in Tunisia, in addition to the Golden Egg Award for Best Short Film at the Küstendorf Film & Music Festival in Serbia. BONBONÉ got selected at many international film festivals, including the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF), New York Film Festival in the USA, Cork Film Festival in Ireland, Stockholm International Film Festival in Sweden, and the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where it landed its world premiere.

In less than 16 minutes, BONBONÉ follows a Palestinian inmate serving time in an Israeli jail as he receives a visit from his wife who devises a bold and crafty operation to fulfill their secret desires.

Written and directed by Rakan Mayasi, BONBONÉ stars Saleh Bakri, Rana Alamuddin, Nadira Omran and Ziad Bakri. The filmis produced by Groundglass235 in co-production with The Postoffice and Mad4Films, in association with db Studios. MAD Solutions is responsible for distributing the film across the Arab world.

Rakan Mayasi is a Palestinian filmmaker, who was born in Germany, raised in Jordan, and currently based in Lebanon. He studied filmmaking in Lebanon and then received intense film training with Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami at the Asian Film Academy in South Korea. Mayasi practiced writing and directing in Serbia, Germany, Morocco, Egypt and Yemen. In addition to BONBONÉ, he has written and directed the two short films Sea Sonata and Roubama, which screened at the Locarno Film Festival in 2012. Mayasi is currently working on his debut feature film that is based on three different stories.
