Theeb Reaps Two Awards at the 8th Abu Dhabi Film Festival
Receiving New Horizons Best Film from the Arab World and the FIPRESCI for Best Narrative Film Awards
Theeb Reaps Two Awards at the 8th Abu Dhabi Film Festival
Following its Mena Premiere within Abu Dhabi Film Festival (ADFF), Theeb, by Jordanian Naji Abu Nowar, has successfully reaped two awards; New Horizons Best Film from the Arab World and the FIPRESCI AWARD for Best Narrative Film.
Theeb was in contending with 18 films at the New Horizons Competition, which showcases feature-length films by first and second time directors from across the world. The competition's jury committee was led by Film Producer Catherine Dussart, and included Syrian actor Basel Khayyat, Moroccan filmmaker Leila Kilani, Indian filmmaker Anup Singh and film critic Charles Tesson.
Presented by the International Federation of Film Critics, in collaboration with the European Film Academy, the FIPRESCI AWARD is granted to the best Arab films from the Narrative Feature, New Horizons, and Documentary Feature Competition sections at ADFF. The jury committee was headed by Russian filmmaker Kirill Razlogov, and included Egyptian film critic Tarek ElShenawy, British Rich Cline, Iraqi Kais Kasim and Indian Subrahamanyan Viswanath.
On the margins of ADFF, director Naji Abu Nowar was named Variety Arab Filmmaker of the Year by Variety Magazine. Abu Nowar received the award on October 27th, 2014, in a gala reception at Emirates Palace.
Theeb had a successful kick-off at Venice Film Festival, where it received the Orizzonti Best Director Award following its World Premiere. The film's win at Venice marks the first time a Jordanian film received the award in the history of this festival. Shortly after, the film had its North American Premiere at Toronto International Film Festival in Canada and then took part in BFI London Film Festival, where it received a Special Mention. Following this, Theeb participated at Mumbai Film Festival.
