Hend Sabry Gives Away Her Bedouin Costume from El Gezira 1 to the Biggest Donor for Her Campaign for Eliminating Hunger as Part of Her Activity as a WFP Ambassador against Hunger
Following the launching of her online fundraising campaign on the behalf of the United Nations' World Food Programme (WFP), Tunisian actress Hend Sabry gave away her Bedouin costume from El Gezira 1 to Mennatallah Lamay, who made the biggest contribution to the two-week online campaign.
Part of Sabry's activity as an Ambassador Against Hunger, the giveaway will be submitted in a ceremony that takes place on Thursday, February 12th, 2015, at the World Food Programme office in Cairo.
After handing her costume, Sabry stated, "The campaign is not over yet," and she challenged her co-star in the film to join the initiative; "Ahmed El Saka is next," she said. "I challenged him to do the same and his campaign will be launched soon. The idea behind this is to keep the wheel turning," added Sabry.
The campaign received donations from people living in more than six countries, including the United States, Canada and Sweden as well as countries in the region including Egypt. The amount of the donation was not revealed as the campaign was designed mainly as an awareness-raising activity.
The funds raised will support the UN food agency in its efforts to feed the most vulnerable people in the region. The campaign succeeded in raising awareness about the struggle many people face to feed their families and about the work WFP carries out in Arab countries to help elevate their suffering.
The Tunisian actress has been a WFP Ambassador Against Hunger since 2009 and has gone on several missions to highlight the plight of the most vulnerable people in the region and to bring support to WFP's work for feeding millions of people worldwide. Her field trips have included visiting Syrian refugees in Zaatari camp in Jordan, Syrian refugees in Lebanon, and WFP's school feeding projects for the most vulnerable children in Egypt and Tunisia.
The proceeds of the campaign will help displaced families affected by the on-going conflict in Syria and people throughout the Arab world who struggle on a daily basis to buy or produce enough food to live a healthy life.
WFP is the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide, delivering food assistance in emergencies and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience. Each year, WFP assists some 80 million people in around 75 countries.
